A wonderfully structured resume may or may not get you a job. But be assured, even one of the following mistakes might lose you one.

1.Not understanding recruiter’s psyche

In marketing and product design, strategists always have the target customer in mind before they make important decisions. You must be thinking that your resume is all about you. And we agree too.

Even though the content of your resume is about you must ask yourself, who is it made for? The answer to this question must guide all decisions you take. See that the real purpose of your resume is to impress the recruiter.
Some MNCs have an AI program sorting through resumes instead of human hiring managers. This is why it is always safe to have a simplistic design to make it machine readable. Then, the selected resumes will be highlighted for the recruiters.

A recruiter reads hundreds of resumes for a limited number of openings. They are mostly looking at your resume to find reasons to reject it. They got no time or extra energy to spare. One mistake on that paper might replace you with a hundred mistake- free profiles.

2. Unimpressive accomplishments

Build a profile, have good achievements, participate in activities, gain genuine experience. That will make you a worthy candidate for a job. And only then can you make the piece of paper you call your resume worthy.
Sorry to be honest. The quality of your resume depends on the quality of your activities. If you didn’t do anything remarkable to mention on your profile till now, that is what you need to work on.

3. Faking it

The seasoned eye of hiring managers can identify cut, copy, paste resumes. They spend time to read yours. Obviously, they will prefer a resume that is made by putting in thought & effort. A resume must reflect your career goals & ambitions.

If you cut, copy, paste it will fade and won’t stand out in a bunch of resumes. Investing time to think about your career goals and ambitions is an investment towards your career.

7. Bad judgement

Freshers sometimes include the first prize they got for drama competition in V standard while applying for the post of a programming consultant. You should not. Include noteworthy achievements, not petty ones.

Stay relevant. Ideally, a fresher’s resume must be one page long. Use your discretion and judgement. Write latest achievements in the past 6 years. Edit mercilessly. Don’t ramble on and on.

8. Misuse of space

The resume must look visually appealing. You don’t want to make a bad impression with bad design. The first impression could be the last one too. Rejection is easier for the recruiters, there are many resumes to replace yours.
Divide the paper into different sections and make efficient use of the space. You need not draw lines and tables; you can segregate into columns by leaving gaps and spaces also.

Relevance is key though. The resume of a photographer or a comic book artist can have a more interesting design as compared to the resume of a software engineer.

9. One for all

This advice is for elite jobs and candidates with special profiles. It is not advisable to send the same resume to every job opening. Tailoring your resume to suit a specific job role increases your chances of being shortlisted.

Keep your resume up- to- date. Don’t use the same resume you have been using for the past decade. Unless, you don’t want to be taken seriously for the job.

10. Flat content

Writing a good resume is a balancing act. You must write your accomplishments without looking like a show- off. You must state facts without fading away into boring territory.

The best way to do this is by stating numbers, hard core achievements. Instead of saying helped in the growth of the company, write: ‘Played a key role in a project that improved the company’s share by 5% or that stood as the #2 contributor towards annual profits”.

Don’t just say you were a co-ordinator; if you were ‘one of the 3 students from your branch chosen as a co-ordinator.’ Don’t just write Team management if you ‘Managed a team of 15’.

Instead of stating, show. Let them see the numbers, awards and achievements. This will help them understand the scale of it.

1. Backlogs

Perhaps a cool senior once told you how to take advantage of the backlog system. The consequences of failing until engineering were scary. But now, you can clear off failed subjects instead of retaking the entire semester. You feel like humanity has meaning again, isn’t it?

But you and I know that this dampens our preparation, puts lag in efforts. A careless mindset is a byproduct of the backlog rule. But, we rarely try to fathom that it is harder to clear a backlog instead of a regular exam.

For starters, your friends would have moved on. You need to figure out the topics and syllabus by yourself. All of this would have been easier if only you knew where to find the correct study material.

You’ll be working extra, preparing for both regular exams and backlogs. This will reflect on your score as well. Besides, some companies have a no backlog policy or a limit on the no.of backlogs.

Instead of working extra hard later, why not take things more sincerely?

2. Weak basics

It is an open secret: Most engineering graduates pass out not knowing the utter basics of their stream. They later waste extra money, time and resources to learn, what they should have learnt in college years.

Basics are required to clear GATE, Technical rounds of an interview and entrance tests; or resort to settling for jobs that do not require them to know thorough basics, sabotaging their careers.

Students start preparing and attend courses to make up for the four years of blur. You can’t get away from learning.

Why not do it when it is easier for you?

3. No soft skills

Students in engineering stream show little or no interest in attending soft skills classes. More so if those classes do not affect your attendance. Karma will bite you back in no time. Because, every job recruitment process on this planet tests your soft skills.

You can read and learn concepts. But developing skills takes time and repeated practice, not crash courses or over night study marathons. So developing them through the course of four years is indispensable.

4. Career planning failure

Being clueless is very common? Alright. I understand. Every year lakhs of innocent students get herded into engineering colleges by parents? It is a pity. Your college spends way too much money in every other aspect, leaving career guidance aside? I feel you.

Is that it? Or are there any more ways in which you could blame others and avoid owning your life? Listen… Take charge. You be responsible for your own career advancement. You are way cooler when you are not busy playing a victim.

Students who aspire for higher education probably plan their career in advance as they are required to apply and prepare in advance. Others wait until they graduate to form a concrete career plan.

It is always wise to plan your projects and electives according to the goal you have in mind. Drive with intent.

Otherwise you will later find solace in blaming your faculty for not telling you what your mind should have selected.
Start asking your seniors, older cousins, placement officers or browse internet left, right and centre about any career related queries you have. Figure out your own path. Show some commitment.

5. Postponing preparation

Some students do figure out what their career plans must look like. Most students find it comfortable to postpone career preparation plans until after graduation. Don’t wait for fear and pressure to set in before you start preparing.
Treating college like vacation time meant to be for fun and friends is not an ideal strategy, mate. It is always easy to crack an on campus job than try for it off- campus.

You think of taking fancy courses or long term GATE coaching and other preparations after their graduation; anything to extend the burden of taking concrete action now.

This postponement and procrastination are mostly misunderstood as carelessness. Psychology states that these are ways of coping with stress. So you procrastinate to cope with stress and this in turn increases your stress. It’s a loop, guys.

Instead of having complex military training like strategies and grand plans to prepare for a career, go the other way. Have tiny regular goals. There is a principle called kaizen in japanese philosophy.

It requires one to do something for a minute everyday to achieve a goal. You can do something for more than a minute; pomodoro requires you to give undivided focus on a task for 40 minutes. Apply techniques like Kaizen or pomodoro in preparation.

6. Project blunders

Buying your project is the best misuse of your intelligence, money and resources. Developing a project on your own could cancel out all your mistakes. It is the quick fix and the shortcut to all your career woes.

Students fail to see the opportunity to learn a lot through a project. It can make you stronger in your fundamentals, improves your chances of getting hired and if things go ridiculously well, you can become an innovator.

Exploit the labs, faculty, expensive resources that your institution can provide to learn something. A well done project can get you an impressive job and fare you through technical and HR rounds of an interview too.

7. No mentors

Mentors can guide you and shape your career. This is very important because, the biggest problem with students is their confusion. A mentor can be a teacher, a senior, alumni or any experienced individual.

Mentors and social connections can get you new opportunities and perspectives. Some of the best opportunities and projects I got came through the guidance of a good mentor or through social connections. Most MNCs have employee referral schemes too.

In the age of social media, it has become easier to connect to people. You need not meet anyone in person. Follow them on social media, Linkedin or write to them. You underestimate the potential opportunities you can get through good networking skills.

8. Random courses

Students sometimes fall prey to the aggressive marketing of unnecessary courses. But the truth is, employers expect freshers only to be good at fundamentals. They will train you according to requirement later.

If you want to take a course, learn your basics thoroughly. C, C++, JAVA, Python or English, Aptitude & Reasoning. Your assessments will be based on basics and fundamentals.

These are the mistakes most students make. They have become so common that most students follow these like rituals. You don’t. Ok?

Most of us think we know exactly what to say when an interviewer asks “Tell me about yourself”. After all, we know about ourselves for quite some time now, isn’t it? Don’t believe me? Try answering the question in your head right now. Stop reading and do it. Seriously.

Though the question is simple, it is painfully difficult to verbalize it clearly and briefly, isn’t it? I know. Interviewers and hiring experts opine that most unsuccessful candidates utterly disappoint them with a bland answer to this question.

Keep the following guidelines in mind and you can fare through it.

1. Know what not to tell

We all feel sentimental about our mother, our pet dog and the beauty of our hometown. But, some of us include that information while telling about themselves. Don’t.

You have to sell yourself for a potential employer. Remember that you are in a professional setting and need to stay relevant. As friendly as the interviewer seems to be, do not give irrelevant information.

The answer must be relevant to your professional life. Don’t go into unnecessary details about every career step. Answer the question briefly and correctly. Give clues to the employer about what you want to be asked.

2. Listen!

Listening is a rare skill, but during interviews it becomes more important. It helps you in answering the question being asked instead of blurting out random sentences. You may think the question is just ‘Tell me about yourself’.
Pay close attention. Every question is asked differently. You need to respond relevantly.

Did they just take your name and say your internship is interesting and then proceeded to ask you to tell about yourself? Then you should not start with “My name is blah” because, they already got that.

You can talk briefly about the things they mention before they ask you the question. Then proceed to give an introduction.

3. Rehearse

Most of us underestimate the effect of nervousness on our ability to answer a question under pressure. Rehearsing the answer will help you navigate the question flawlessly despite being stressed.

‘Tell me about yourself” will be asked within the first few minutes of the interview. Rehearsing will enable your subconscious to say something proper when your conscious brain will not be able to handle things under pressure.
If you have experienced stage fright at least once in your life, you know what I am talking about. You and I know that there is a lot of difference between knowing the answer to a question and flawlessly verbalizing it to an impressive degree.

Rehearsing will ensure that most of your mental energy is not spent in trying to frame your thoughts into intelligible sentence structures. You can then pay attention to the content of what you say and pay attention to the interviewers.
Besides, there are a million things about the job process that we can’t control. But one thing you and I know for sure is that, there is going to be a ‘Tell me about yourself’ question. If you don’t show pro- activeness and at least prepare for it, then you are not giving your 100%.

4. Many versions

The answer to the question must look unrehearsed and natural, even though you rehearsed it with a script. When you by heart only one answer, you can’t stay relevant if the situation or question is slightly tweaked.
Never forget that your answer must be relevant to the question being asked. That is why you must practice multiple ways of answering the same question.

Tell Me About Yourself

While practicing different answers, think of different ways in which the questions might be posed to you. This will help you in becoming mentally prepared if the interviewer tweaks the question a little.

5. Style of delivery

No matter how prepared you are, if you don’t concentrate on the style of delivery, you might speak like a robot who by hearted an answer or worse- appear under prepared and incompetent.

Style of delivery includes good body language and diction. Be audible and speak clearly without speaking too fast or too slow. Maintain eye contact and make sure your hand gestures are neither too loud nor non- existent.

This comes naturally with years of practice. Otherwise it needs conscious mental attention which you can give only if you followed all the previous steps.

6. Know how to end

The most awkward part of answering “tell me about yourself” is when a candidate doesn’t know how to end it perfectly. There is a sweet spot where you must stop to nail the answer.

Dragging it beyond a point or abruptly pulling the breaks on your answer will make the answer weak. You can end it in a couple of ways:

1. Tell them you can speak further during the course of the interview. “That’s it. I’m hoping we’ll speak a bit more in a moment.”

2. Ask them if they want to know anything in specific. “Do you want me to speak about anything in detail?”
